Paragons on pedestals, heartless harridans, delectable damsels and blushing brides - that's how we women have figured in love poetry through the ages.

Here women poets have their say and give their own version of the joy and wonder, angst, anger and lust we feel as we fall in and out of love, live happily ever after and break up the next day.

There are poems to celebrate lesbian and heterosexual love; there's one for the woman in the offfice and one for the spider behind the toilet door.

Four Plays by Women.

Between 1890 and 1914, the burgeoning feminist movement that culminated in the militancy of the suffragetts, encouraged an increasing number of women to use the theatre to explore women's experience.

These are not the idealised portraits of the 'New Women' of male playwrights like Shaw, but realistic pictures of women's problematic lives.

  1. 'Alan's Wife' - Florence Bell and Elizabeth Robins.

  2. 'Diana of Dobson's' - Cicely Hamilton.

June,

New and Selected Love Poems.

The joy, the erotic aweetness of love glow at the heart of this sensational volume of poetry. The Haruko poems dip and dove-tail taking from the haiku its purity and economy, but giving them a vision that if June Jordan's own.

Every poem captures the rapture of ecstasy and explodes with the most complex images as well as the simplicity of an aching desire to unite Asian-American and African communities in love and politics, both.

The other poems, selected from volumes published over the last twenty years, bear witness to the depth and breadth of June Jordan's poetic brilliance.

AN ANTHOLOGY OF SCOTTISH WOMEN POETS.

Edinburgh

£6.00

Catherine Ed),

with Gaelic Translations by Meg Bateman.

Over a hundred poets are brought together in this unique anthology, demonstrating the scope and depth of a previously undocumented poetic tradition among Scottish women writers.

This collection contains a wide range of work, from the Middle Ages to the present day, in Gaelic, Scots and English, as forgotten or undiscovered poets take their place beside the well-established.

Catherine Kerrigan's introduction provides the background and context to the different traditions in Scotland including the oral/ballad, Gaelic bardic and modern tradtions, and attempts to identify recurring themes in this 'women's tradition'.

There are parallel translations by Meg Bateman of the gaelic poems.

Brief biographies and bibliographies of the poets are given.

Challenging current notions of Scottish literary history this book gives a firm foundation for future research as well as being of tremendous interest tot he general reader.

THE SELECTED POEMS OF ANNE SEXTON.

Virago

Diane & Diana Eds),

Anne Sexton could be called the first poet of contemporary women. She spoke of her life as no woman before her had dared to speak.

Her language was simple domestic; her imagery arresting; her subject metter urgent, shocking and exciting. She wrote about mental breakdown, sex addiction, abortion - the other side of ordinary life.

Stepping to the podium in long dresses she wore for public readings, she seemed anything but ordinary. Kicking off her shoes, lighting a cigarette, she would read, in her marvellous, throaty voice, harrowing accounts of insanity and loss.

But fame could not cure her 'madness' and in October 1974, aged 45, she committed suicide.

An Anthology of British Feminist Poetry 1969 - 1979.

"The poems here are never resigned. Nothing is assumed inevitable or seen as 'natural'. Feminists have to be more conscious than anyone else. We must continuously see and say that what the world/men has declared invisible or invalid is real and important...

The work in this book comes out of the connections we are making, a collective sense of effort and of discovery. We intend to tell each other everything we can, every secret, because we know this intimate, difficult exchange makes a difference, is the process of change".

STEALING THE LANGUAGE.

Women's Press

£4.50

Alicia Suskin,

The emergence of Women's Poetry iin America.

In this exciting and important new book, the American poet and scholar Alicia Suskin Ostriker argues that throughout most of our history the woman writer has had to state her self-definitions in code: to disguise passion as piety, rebellion as obedience. Women poets have been excluded from the 'mainstream' even more than the novelists.

Yet today, the author detects in the work of poets as diverse as Muriel Rukeyser, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Audre Lorde, June Jordan, May Sarton and Adrienne Rich a female-rooted movement that is challenging, and changing, the history of American poetry. And thus all poetry written in the English language.

RATUSHINSKAYA.

PENCIL LETTER.

Bloodaxe

£3.75

Irina,

"I know it won't be received Or sent. The page will be In shreds as soon as I have scribbled it".

With these words Irina Ratushinskaya began her Pencil Letter, a poem she never expected anyone to read. It was written in prison, in 1982, as she waited to be tried for 'Anti-soviet agitation and propaganda'.

Four months later, in march 1983, she was sentenced to 7 years' hard labour. Her crime: writing poetry.

But Irina's Pencil Letter was received. The poems which a soviet judge had called 'a danger to the state' were published in her book 'No, I'm Not Afraid'. She herself was unaware that they had been smuggled out, and that an international campaign was being mounted on her behalf, spear headed by her own poetry.

In a 'strict regime' labour camp at Barashavo in Mordovia, she was held for three years in the small zone, a special unit for women prisoners of conscience. This new book contains the poems she wrote there. Many were first written with burnt matchsticks onto bars of soap, then memorised.

Irina first heard that her Pencil Letter had got through when the KGB came to see her in the labour camp. They told her she would get another 10 years for having her work published in the west.

The rest is history. Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan were given copies of her book. In October 1986, on the eve of the Reykjavik summit, Irina Ratushinskaya was released.

Here they are, together with many more: poems by contemporary women, about women's lives.

The Raving Beauties are a 3-woman team of actress-singers: Anna Carteret, Sue Jones-Davies and Fanny Viner.

REILLY.

SCARS UPON MY HEART.

Virago

£1.75

Catherine Ed),

Women's Poetry and Verse of the First World War.

This, the first anthology of women war poets for over 60 years, will come as a surprise to many. It shows, for example, that women were writing protest poetry before Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sasson, and that the view of 'the women at home', ignorant and idealistic, was quite false.

Many of these poems come out of direct experiences of nursing the victims of trench warfare, or the pain of lovers, brothers, sons lost.

Some of the poets are well known: Nancy Cunard, Rose Macauley, Charlotte Mew, Alice Meynell, Edith Nesbit, Edith Sitwell, Marie Stopes, Katherine Tynan; others will be less familiar. But here, as elsewhere, 'the poetry is in the pity' - a moving record of women's experience of war.

9 PLAYS BY BLACK WOMEN.

Margaret B Ed),

The Black American Woman as Playwright - a powerful and exciting force in today's theatre.

The stunning intellect and humanity of Lorraine Hansberry won her the Drama Critics Circle Award in 1959 for 'A Raisin in the Sun'. Ntozake Shange's Broadway smash hit, 'For Coloured Girls...' brought an innovative performance style and text to the American theatre. Continuing that tradition of excellence, a whole new generation of exciting black women playwrights is now giving a much-needed vitality and fresh perspective to the contemporary stage.

9 Plays by Black Women brings together the best of the new plays and their forerunners. Whether it is the brilliant fragment of Lorraine Hansberry's unfinished historical drama 'Toussaint' or Aishah Rahman's compelling underground classic of teenage pregnancy, 'Unfinished Women Cry in No Man's Land while a bird dies in a golded cage'.

These plays speak persuasively from the particular vantage point of black women - the nexus of sex and race. the result is extraordinary drama, controversial and energetic, and it is collected here in the first anthology of its kind.
